A history of Dormeuil, and the incredible wool fabrics the company creates.

While England and France have long been world centers of fine fabric production in design in their own right, it wasn’t until the mid 19th century that English fabrics were imported into France. Jules Dormeuil founded The House of Dormeuil in 1842, becoming the first company to introduce fine English wool into the French market. With a design house located in Paris, and their manufacturing center located in the heart of Yorkshire, Dormeuil specializes in incredible wool fabrics that bring to life the rich histories of both locations.

Located in the beautiful, lush English countryside, few places embody the spirit of England with such brilliance. Home to many celebrated writers such as W.H. Auden and the Bronte sisters, Yorkshire is one of the greenest counties in the entire country, and is commonly called ‘The Garden of England.’

In addition to its beautiful scenery and culture, Yorkshire has long been home to a thriving wool industry. Situated at the convergence of the Colne and Holme Rivers, the town of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire has been a center of wool production for centuries. Early inhabitants treasured the river waters for their ability to effectively wash raw wool.</div><div><br></div>

Wool production in England was originally a cottage industry, with all steps – including spinning, weaving, and [dyeing](https://www.commonshare.com/capabilities/dyeing) – taking place in the home. However, the Industrial Revolution helped to catapult this local specialty into a booming international wool industry that had its heart in West Yorkshire.</div><div><br></div>

When Dormeuil was founded in Paris 1842, the family business quickly became an industry leader through their innovative approach to sourcing, production, and international business relationships. They were integral to fostering the demand for English wool, and in 1871, Dormeuil opened a branch in Yorkshire.</div><div><br></div>

The innovative vision that inspired Jules to introduce English fabric into French and international markets only continued to grow. By the early 1900s, Dormeuil had developed strong trade relationships with Asia – particularly Japan – and had opened a shop in New York City, in addition to their Paris and Yorkshire locations. They have remained committed to producing truly unique fabrics, and their spirit of innovation is evident in every step of the production process.</div><div><br></div>

Dormeuil’s sourcing team scours the world in search of incredible new raw materials. They have invented a number of groundbreaking fabrics, including Kirgyz White, a luxurious wool made from the [coats](https://www.commonshare.com/capabilities/coats) of a species of goat local to Kirgyzstan, and Jade, a blend of New Zealand wool and the gemstone from which the fabric takes its name.</div>

After sourcing only the finest materials, the fibers are spun into thread and woven at the company’s Huddersfield location based on the designs drafted at Dormeuil’s Paris branch. Because the threads of fiber are so delicate, the [weaving](https://www.commonshare.com/capabilities/weaving) process requires special looms and highly skilled artisans to be executed effectively. The fineness of the yarn is what lends Dormeuil’s finished fabrics their luxurious texture and drape, making them ideal for <a href="http://www.source4style.com/vertical/suitings/suits/collection" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><strong>suiting</strong> and other luxury apparel.</a></div><div><br></div><a href="http://www.source4style.com/vertical/suitings/suits/collection" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">
