Girlfriend Collective will launch its full line of leggings and sports bras on its online shop on June 28, with various items available for pre-order in the weeks leading up to the full launch. The brand says each of its pairs of leggings is composed of 25 water bottles recovered from Taiwan. The leggings will retail for $70 each. The company’s factory is SA8000 certified, meaning it follows regulations of transparency and fair wages. Since beginning production, Girlfriend Collective says it has recovered 6 million plastic water bottles from being sent to landfills in Taiwan.
In creating active wear from recycled materials, Girlfriend Collective will join other fashion brands such as Reformation and Patagonia, which have made commitments to producing environmentally-friendly clothing. Stella McCartney also recently announced a partnership with Parley for the Oceans to create apparel from plastic recovered from the ocean. The most recent edition of Miami Fashion Week placed sustainable practices at the forefront of its event, partnering with Miami-Dade college on a series of workshops dedicated to developing eco-friendly practices.
