ArcelorMittal Dofasco, hailed as Canada's premier flat-roll steel producer, is blazing a trail with its latest breakthrough in its relentless pursuit of carbon-neutral steel production. Today, the company proudly introduces a suite of five Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for construction materials crafted from XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced (RRP) steel.

These EPDs represent a monumental leap forward in the quest for sustainability, offering a diverse array of construction solutions—ranging from cladding to roofing—that boast a significantly diminished embodied carbon footprint compared to traditional steel offerings prevalent in North America.

Setting the Standard: ArcelorMittal's Commitment to Sustainable Steel Solutions

Andrew Connor, VP Commercial at ArcelorMittal Dofasco, emphasizes the importance of this achievement, stating, "These Environmental Product Declarations certify that production in our Electric Arc Furnace generates the lowest embodied carbon sheet steel available in the North American market. This is another testament to our dedication to delivering innovative and sustainable steel solutions for our customers, supporting their efforts to minimize GHG emissions."

ArcelorMittal's XCarb™ RRP steel, manufactured via the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) route, boasts a minimum of 70% scrap content, with potential for up to 90%, all without reliance on carbon offsets to achieve reduced carbon intensity. Notably, XCarb™ RRP is a physical steel product, setting it apart from other offerings in the industry. Its lower CO2 intensity has been rigorously verified through Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), encompassing Scope 1, 2, and upstream Scope 3 emissions. Additionally, a confirmation letter confirms the use of renewable electricity in the steelmaking process.

Compliant with ISO 21930, ISO 14025, and relevant North American PCR standards, these EPDs offer transparency and credibility to consumers and stakeholders alike. They cover a diverse range of products including cold-formed sections, corrugated steel pipe, hollow structural sections, steel cladding, and roofing, all available for review online at XCarb™ - Recycled and renewably produced products.

Pioneering Sustainable Practices: ArcelorMittal's Environmental Leadership

Looking ahead, ArcelorMittal is steadfast in its commitment to reducing the carbon intensity of its steel production by 25% globally by 2030, with the ultimate goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. At its Hamilton, ON base, ArcelorMittal Dofasco has already made significant strides, with carbon emission reductions of approximately 60% by transitioning away from coal-based steelmaking to Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) fed Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking.

The release of these EPDs underscores ArcelorMittal's leadership in sustainable steel production and sets a new standard for environmental responsibility in the industry. As the world moves towards a greener future, ArcelorMittal Dofasco remains at the forefront, driving innovation and delivering solutions that balance environmental stewardship with industry excellence.
