The commune of Troyes, situated about two hours east of Paris, is a global center of the textile and fashion industries. The picture-perfect town known for its 16th century half-timbered houses, is home to a number of industry leaders including Lacoste, and the subject of today's sourcing trip, Bugis.

Troyes was founded during the Roman era, and was originally called Augustobona Tricassium. While always a bustling city, it wasn't until the Middle Ages that the commune began its long relationship with the textile trade. Champagne cloth fairs, which were hotbeds of trade and social communion, became extremely popular in Troyes. These fairs focused on the trade of leather and fabrics, as well as other commodities such as spices, and furs. Today, the commune remains a center of the textile industry, and while the trade has been transformed from a cottage industry to a highly technical production, Troyes' commitment to quality and innovation has never wavered. Bugis was established in Troyes in 1956, and has drawn much inspiration from the area's varied fabric mills and producers, as well as the vibrant beauty and spirit of the region. Throughout its almost 60 years in business, Bugis has become a pioneer of textile innovation. At their offices and production facility, they create woven high-tech fabrics that combine the best of traditional expertise with the most promising advancements in cutting-edge technology, allowing the company to offer both attractive and practical textiles for a range of applications including technical, medical, and fashion. Bugis uses state of the art circular looms which allow them to efficiently produce a range of fabrics including Jersey, fleece, quilted, terry, and jacquard from raw materials such as organic cotton, linen, wool, bamboo, modal, tencel, polyester, and silk. Through strategic partnerships with other industry leaders and extensive in-house research, the Bugis team is able to take advantage of the very latest, and most effective methods of fabric production.

In addition to their commitment to quality and innovation, Bugis is also deeply invested in protecting and respecting our environment. At their facility, they have developed internal sorting methods which allow them to separate fabric, plastic, and cardboard, so that these materials may be appropriately recycled. They have also worked hard to decrease their water and energy consumption, and lower their air and dirty water emissions substantially. An important step in this process of growth was their OEKO-TEX certification which ensures that Bugis doesn't use any chemicals in production that may negatively affect the health of their customers and/or employees. In impeccable style, Bugis has combined the traditional beauty and dedication of Troyes and artisanal fabric production with a hunger for innovation in all its forms. Whether they are dreaming up a gorgeous new design, crafting ingenious new production methods to optimize efficiency, or working to reduce their environmental impact, one thing is sure: Bugis is creating some of the most impressive and inspiring fashion and technical fabrics on the market today.
