Ready-to-wear brand Claudie Pierlot of the French group SMCP, majority-owned by Chinese giant Shandong Ruyi, launched its "Claudie Cares," program three years ago, comprising of actions committed to improving its impact on the planet. This plan is based on four main areas relating to fabrics and materials for its products, the environment, people, and know-how. In fact, the brand had already taken steps in this direction but had not communicated them until now. As it states on its website, "Claudie Pierlot started its carbon footprint assessment in 2018, the results of which were shared at the end of 2019. We are now in the follow-up phase of the action plan to reduce our carbon emissions." All Claudie Pierlot collections are designed in its Parisian workshops. In the design studio, it creates the prototypes on its models, draws its exclusive motifs and develops its patterns.
On the first point focusing on the materials used, the company reports that today 22 % of its ready-to-wear offer is eco-responsible. The goal is to increase this to 80% by 2025. For several years, the brand has been using organic GOTS certified cotton, recycled cotton and wool that is certified GRS and RCS, pineapple fabric that resembles leather, biodegradable cellulose fibers, as well as eco-sustainably certified polyester and viscose.
When the brand does use conventional leather, it uses that which is certified by the Leather Working Group, which oversees the environmental management of its leather production sites. It has also reduced water consumption and limited the use of chemicals and energy in the production of its denim pieces, while since the beginning of the year it has renounced the use of fur. Regarding the second point on the reduction of its environmental impact, the company has identified its key objectives in its carbon balance, prioritizing its emission items. It has adopted a 3-5 year roadmap "to be part of the Earth's 2-degree trajectory to limit global warming."
The third pillar of Claudie Cares is people. "Human beings are at the heart of our priorities," proclaims the brand, which is committed to "the development of its teams," 85% of whom are women, increases the number of committed partnerships and imposes for its production "strict specifications for compliance with local and international regulations, norms and standards in terms of health, safety, environment and labor law" on its suppliers. For several years, Claudie Pierlot has been striving to transform the way she produces, leaning towards more responsible processes with the Claudie Cares program.
