Normally the runway dictates fashion trends. But recent Google Search data has revealed what the people want to wear this spring. From tulle to emoji jogger pants, here are the most popular fashion and fabrics searched for online in the U.S.

As consumers increase their online shopping activities, internet data - previously unavailable in past decades - is being recorded, analysed and used by Google to highlight up-and-coming fashion trends in the U.S.Google analyzed billions of searches dating back to 2009 to provide details of what's trending in fashion and fabric this spring.Past apparel-related queries based on similar search-demand patterns, as well as geographic data and co-search behavior (such as words and phrases being searched alongside a particular fashion), provided the insights. A blog post was released on Sunday by Google brand strategist Yarden Horwitz and fashion data scientist Olivier Zimmer, resulting in three dominant style predictions. Tulle SkirtsAccording to trending Google apparel searches, tulle skirts grew rapidly in popularity, up 34% from January 2014 to January 2015. From the west coast, the tulle skirt trend made its way across the U.S. with shoppers searching beyond the typical ballet pink. The most favored color options were black or white. New Yorkers were one of the states least likely to be adopting the skirt, according to a graph, compared to its surge in LA.From a design perspective, it was found Americans were buying tulle to make their own skirts. Top searches showed more than 20,000 tulle skirt tutorial videos on YouTube were also recorded, highlighting the surge in manufacturing interest.Jersey JoggersTranscending gender, jogger pants were a top search for men and women. Shown to be a mass market item, it reflects the current athleisure trend - the blending of typical athletic gear with ready-to-wear apparel.Looking at the terms searched with 'jogger pants' (such as men's, women's, brand names, and styles), "it seems that consumers are already well-versed in jogger pants," said Google. The search engine added that people sought brands that offered "the best selection and deals".In looking at the particular styles, Emoji-print jogger pants were the most popular followed by leather joggers and pants made from camo print, denim, bandana paisley, sequins, galaxy print, acid wash and finally, florals.Midi skirtsFalling in between the maxi and mini skirt, the more versatile midi-skirt (which was a huge runway trend for Spring and Fall 2015 in London) is set to boom this Spring, according to Google. Originating from the swinging Sixties, the midi skirt is making its way back to the U.S, with no particular fabric surpassing another in popularity. The garment recorded a lower overall search volume compared to tulle skirts and jogger pants, but witnessed a 900% growth over the past three years.According to Google analytics, the midi-skirt is "still in its early stages of growth within the U.S. market".
