About the USDA

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is a federal executive department responsible for developing and executing policies related to farming, agriculture, forestry, and food. Established in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln, the USDA plays a critical role in supporting American farmers, ensuring food safety, and promoting agricultural sustainability.

One of the USDA's primary functions is to provide leadership on food, agriculture, natural resources, rural development, nutrition, and related issues based on sound public policy, the best available science, and efficient management. It oversees various agencies and programs aimed at advancing these objectives, including the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), and National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), among others.

The USDA is also responsible for administering and enforcing laws related to agriculture, such as the Farm Bill, which sets policies and funding for agricultural programs, conservation efforts, and nutrition assistance. Additionally, the department conducts research to improve agricultural productivity, sustainability, and resilience to climate change through agencies like the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
