Live from the Staple Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, an array of musical talent donned ultra-experimental gowns at this year's Grammy Awards. S4S looks at the best gowns (and suits) of the evening, admiring the exquisite use of tulle, silk and embellished jewels to dress the music industry's belles of the ball.

Not to be outshone by anyone, Madonna’s Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy mini dress and thigh-high boots flashed intimate pieces of flesh, while frills and ruffles fell like a fountain from the hips of Rihanna, courtesy of Giambattista Valli Couture. Plunging necklines dominated the red carpet in 2015 - care of Proenza Schouler, Brandon Maxwell and Giorgio Armani and their gowns for Beyoncé, Iggy Azaelia and Lady Gaga. But it was Ciara, Taylor, Gwen and Rihanna who pulled the carpet out from underneath the rest1. Ciara walked the red carpet in a twirling wheel of sculpted tulle. Architecturally inspired, the jet black, part-sheer gown saw the pop star turn heads working an Alexandre Vauthier Spring 2014 Couture gown. Not letting the frills and spills, which included a long train, overpower her, Ciara paired the gown with a gold metal belt that cinched at the waist, enhancing the star’s figure. Letting the dress speak for itself, styling was kept minimal with a classic pair of black Christian Louboutin ‘Mea Culpa’ pumps. 2. Rihanna was sugar-coated on the Grammys red carpet. Normally one for shock tactics at high-class celebrity events, Rihanna floated along in front of the cameras wearing her Giambattista Valli Spring 2015 Couture gown, dripping with Chopard jewels. The fountain of ruffles and layers looked like candyfloss made from pink tulle, spun voluminously. A matching pink satin bandeau topped the confectionary frills with plaited black-and-white silk ribbon trim. 3. Taylor Swift channeled oceanic vibes at the Grammys on Sunday. Wearing a gown from Elie Saab spring 2015 (which showed this month at Paris couture fashion week) the ‘Shake It Off’ singer shimmered and dazzled in a mermaid-tail teal gown, with ombré color hues. The firm silk formed an updated version of the mullet-dress, which slit at the front to reveal understated mini dress in the tonal and temperate color palette of green and blue. The silhouette remained classic with the cinched waist - texturized by large, statement pleats. Up top, shoulder cut outs took the gown to modern realms once more, while color blocking magenta-pink sandals in soft leather popped against the turquoise gown. Matching green Lorraine Schwartz earrings, reminiscent of seashells, pinned down the marine look.   4.Gwen Stefani had the opportunity wear two outfits at this year’s Grammys. Hitting the red carpet first, Stefani reawakened her ‘No Doubt’ rocker days. Opting for a black Atelier Versace jumpsuit from spring 2015, the one-piece hosted artisan structure with an embellished corset bodice, which s-shaped across her chest. Gwen updated to suit from its recent runway debut at Paris Couture fashion week, by tapering in the suit's silk blend pant legs. On stage, performing ‘My Heart Is Open’ with Adam Levine, Stefani wore another Atelier Versace gown, this time in hot-blood red. Custom-made, the strapless gown cut in with a thigh-high slit and structured detail at the hip. The intricate beading at the bodice mixed with the silk satin cut outs were reminiscent of the Atelier Versace spring 2015 collection, adding a sudden flourish to the dress.   Final wordMajor fabric winners at the 2015 Grammy Awards were satin, tulle, pure silks and silk and cotton blends. Sheer looks were perfected with shapes formed out of tulle, simultaneously adding volume to gowns. Lace was minimal on the red carpet, however, as celebrities opted for gowns and suits offering more updated looks (rebelling against the classic softness and femininity of lace). Subtle (and sometimes not) jewel beading and embellishments were the prominent signs of richness, adding textural shimmer to the finely made pieces. Next stop - the Oscars.
