With sustainable denim high in demand, Italian textile company Officina+39 has found a way to revamp denim production processes.

Based in Biella, Italy, Officina+39 is a textile company that has innovated new and sustainable methods for dyeing and finishing in the garment industry. With denim being the brand’s main passion, the Italian company’s vision is to make textiles a greener industry. The Demand for Sustainable Denim With the goal to reduce their water footprint, many major clothing manufacturers have attempted to cut down on their water consumption used in the cotton lifecycle, the jeans finishing process, all while still giving them a particular style. Nowadays, denim promotes diversity, eco-consciousness, and innovation. This is thanks to the increase of conscious consumerism and responsible manufacturing which have begun to walk hand-in-hand. Producers are not only listening to their customers, but they’re also more enthusiastic about disclosing all information on their facilities, working conditions, manufacturing practices, and materials. Having spent nearly half a century in an attempt to age new jeans, the denim industry has caused indisputable damage to the environment and to the health of garment workers. Until now, the use of ozone gas to bleach down denim fabric has offered a natural alternative, but Officina+39’s technology enables manufacturing companies to diversify their operations. Oz-One Powder Last year, the sustainable chemicals company launched its cutting-edge innovation Oz-One Powder. This treatment allows factories to achieve the popular bleached, acid-washed, and distressed looks on denim fabric in an environmentally-friendly process, comparable to ozone. The process uses traditional machines without water, the Oz-One particles break down black dyes of indigo and sulfur, as well as Officina+39’s dischargeable dyestuffs series called Nebudye. These substances can be used in nebulization systems like Core by Tonello or Eflow by Jeanologia. Officina+39’s Managing Director, Andrea Venier stated that the idea for Oz-One Power came to fruition during Italy’s lockdown during the first half of 2020. Being aware of how purchasing power and trends in denim would bend back once restrictions were eased, the company committed itself to provide a textile solution that was environmentally friendly and accessible. Venier himself doesn’t describe Oz-One as being more environmentally sustainable than ozone technology. In difficult post-pandemic times, innovations such as Oz-One Powder will give washing machines another option to offer brands more sustainable and eco-friendly technology, using machines at their disposal. Although there isn’t a one size fits all solution for sustainable issues, the technology by Officina+39 presents an opportunity to create a more conscious approach to apparel.
