Iconic department store and retail industry leader Macy's has set sustainable goals for 2025 and in doing so, contributes to improving the environment. The U.S. based department store chain is working to boost its sustainability plan through 2025. The company plans to operate more efficiently and adapt new environmentally-friendly solutions. The company estimates to reduce, within four years, the energy consumed by up to 10%, comparable to 2018, and also have in mind to reduce water consumption by up to 25%, compared to 2019. Macy's also indicated that it plans to increase recycling in its stores by up to 80% and will implement new sustainable materials such as synthetic cotton and 100% wood materials by 2030. It’s also pushing a corporate chemical policy to promote the restriction and disclosure of specific substances. In fact, in 2022, Macy's will develop its first list of restricted substances for its line of footwear, apparel and home textiles. It’ll also complete the list in 2024 and 2025 with products not necessarily related to apparel. In addition, the company intends to include at least 5 thousand pages of sustainable products on its website. Therefore, Macy's has set out to reduce the environmental impact of its operations, which is why it’ll manage waste from 727 stores in its logistics network in the supply chain.

A Sustainable Investment On March 3rd, Macy’s announced that it’ll spend $5 billion, more than triple what it earned last year, to become a more diverse and sustainable company within three years. The iconic company, which in 2021 returned to profit after suffering heavy losses in the year marked by the pandemic, disclosed in a release that its plan will be based on three pillars, "people, communities and the planet," with the goal of "contributing to the common good." The company's chief executive, Jeff Gennette, who also chairs the world's largest retail association, the U.S. National Retail Federation, acknowledged that shareholders "expect more" from companies and seeks to be a leader in that transformation. "How we run the business is as important as what we sell," he added. The chain also stated that a “percentage” of the $5 billion will go to support minority and underrepresented designers, brands and partners, as well as product and service suppliers. Among other figures, it pledged to donate $100 million to NGOs focused on training "underrepresented" youth, invest $35 million to fund its employees' education up to the college level and $2 million in scholarships for minority youth in the fashion, design and sustainability sectors. Moreover, Macy's aims to reach a 30% share of "ethnically diverse" managers by 2025.   About Macy’s Macy's New York is the most famous department store in the United States.
