Details are important, plain and simple. In a world where so many creatives are competing for the coveted role of top trendsetter or hottest designer of the moment, what distinguishes one brand or collection from the other can be the difference between failure and success. Often, the things that make the biggest difference are found in the smallest details -- trims, unique stitching, or embossing for instance.
When it comes to fashion, particularly menswear, it's easy to get lost in a repetitive sea of blazers, tees, and trousers that all seem to morph into one collection, regardless of their respective creators. Although so many elements go into making that one signature piece or collection, just doing the bare minimum is not enough. More than ever, originality is key. What better way to achieve this than by adding small elements -- sometimes unnoticed by the untrained eye -- that take these pieces to the next level?
The bi-annual Vegas edition of the Liberty Fairs trade event, which took place February 15-17, showcased emerging and established men's contemporary brands. Among dozens of seemingly endless rows of booths there stood designers who truly embraced the little things when designing their collections, designers who are a testament to the importance of details in fashion. Sometimes these details were prominent and rang loud and clear throughout the collection, but often they were just noticeable enough to make a subtle statement.
JKT New York showcased its newest collection of sport coats and blazers, available in an array of colors and weaves. Among the standard twills and plaids, what jumped out was the lining on the inside of each coat collar -- a fun lilac and maroon floral print carried through to every piece. Taking things a step further, JKT revived traditional dress shirts with a small floral detail on the bottom seam. The designer's ability to mix traditional style with quirky, unexpected finishes is refreshing and exemplary of the power of details.
Many other designers had the same idea, including unique features within their individual pieces and collections as a whole -- from dress shirts to loungewear to accessories, and everything in between. The designer behind Salence combined detailing with functionality, responding to men's constant needs for more pockets in outerwear. The end product is a beautifully designed jacket with two discreet inside pockets perfect for carrying extra cash, cards, or keys.
France-based Basus creates the traditional everyday tee and button- down, but with a twist. Each piece is embellished with cork, an innovative material sweeping the fashion industry. Spotting the cork detailing is sometimes a game of hide and seek -- hidden on the underside seam of a sleeve -- but is often a visible border alongside a shirt pocket or sweater pouch.
As the feat of getting noticed grows harder with the sheer volume of emerging independent designers growing exponentially, detailing in fashion garments is no longer just an option. Whether it's for added style, functionality, or a signature touch, it's clear that even the smallest of details can speak volumes.
