Merino Wool: Meet Asia's Woolmark Prize Finalists For 2016

The search is on again for the next International Woolmark Prize winner. Showcasing the best in Australian Merino wool, 12 designers have been shortlisted as the Asian finalists for 2015-2016. Separated into women's and men's wear, one winner from each will go on to compete against their respective finalists from the U.S., Asia, Australia, the British Isles and the Middle East. Constance Tsui by Davidson Tsui


China's Davidson Tsui graduated in Art and Design from Raffles Design Institute and Fashion Design Womenswear from Central St Martins, unveiling his first collection for AW13. Now in Shanghai, Tsui works the theme of love into his women's wear, using traditional Chinese handcraft with new modern lines made from wool, silk-wool blends and leather.

Doris Q


Doris Q is sporty, chic brand with future eco-fabrics and architectural constructions, bowing in 2012. Lead by Chinese-Australian Doris Qiu, the designer takes new fabric ideas into collections, without loosing wearability and quality.

Hei Lau


Eponymous women's wear label Hei Lau was established in 2009. A clear aesthetic is draping for the Chinese brand, with designs emphasising shapes and constructions. Meanwhile, the inside details of garments – a cut, a dart, a fold or a seam – are hidden intricacies crafted by Lau. 

J Koo


J Koo was established in London in 2010 by two Korean designers, Jinwoo Choi and Yeonjoo Koo. Both studied at Central Saint Martins with a focus on British men’s tailoring. The duo has incorporated their knowledge of men's wear to form a structured women's wear brand for an androgynous-meets-classic and contemporary look.

Jarret


Helmed by designer Lee Ji-Youn, Korean label Jarret launched in 2009. With a degree in both fashion and English literature, Ji-Youn’s studies see her tell a story using East and West nuances as her protagonists. She bases her silhouettes on the Modernist trend, mixed with practical fur and wool fabrics.

Pinghe


China's Ping He founded Pinghe in London back in 2009 after a stint with McQueen. He's luxury women's wear style derives from her belief in the 360° of fit; creating garments that shape, flatter and empower and feel comfortable. Unique fabric and sculpting embroidery, combined with unconventional seams, are her go-to styles morphing a different silhouette. 

Taro Horiuchi


Born in Tokyo, Taro Horiuchi moved to London as a teen and graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Now back home, his Made-in-Japan philosophy in fabric, texture and color relates well as a contemporary women's wear label. Inspiration comes from futuristic art, which Horiuchi describes as: “capturing a part of modern age”.

Whosthat


Hong Kong's Meiyi Cheung started her fashion-meets-art label in 2013, merging apparel by collaborations with artists. Deemed wearable art materials, detail, garment structure, and craftsmanship are at the forefront of the aesthetic. In 2014 Cheung was named Fashion Designer of the Year by the International Design Award.

Ffixxed Studios


A collaborative art and design project helmed by Hong Kong's Kain Picken and Fiona Lau, the Ffixxed Studios makes both men’s and women’s fashion label that evolves other art and design-related activities. All garments are produced in-house, located at Wutong Mountain in China. The collections portray the role clothing and objects play in constructing daily life, using natural fibers.

Hui By Eran Hui


Designer Eran Hui launched Hui By Eran Hui in 2014, after graduating from the College of Liaoning institute for art and design. The men's wear label offers a mix of European style cutting with American street fashion, combined with plutonic colors, fabrics and patterns.

Liberium Arbitrium


Designed by Japan's Shinsuke Mitsuoka, Liberium Arbitrium refers to one's ability to choose freely. Mitsuoka moved to the UK to study fashion design, graduating in 2010 from Nottingham Trent University. Mitsuoka launched the first collection as Liberum Arbitrium for SS12 in London. The following year he returned to Japan to launch the brand as a men's wear label.

Munsoo Kwon


Launched in 2011, Munsoo Kwon is a South Korean designer building designs based on neatly tailored silhouettes that are modern and practical. Kwon’s aesthetic sticks well to proportions and impeccable fit and is adorned in unique detailing. Rather than overtly branding his pieces, Kwon uses his signature split-open details on the back and special pockets on shirts.
