Mulberry, one of the world's most prestigious leather fashion brands, has launched a 100% sustainable handbag. The Portobello bag is made from full-grain leather which, like all the leather used by Mulberry, is a by-product of food production. The tannery in which the leather is treated is rated 'gold' for sustainability by the Leather Working Group. Even the thread used for its stitching is made from recycled polyester fibre. The inspiration for the design comes from the humble plastic bag. The Portobello maintains the beautiful utility of this silhouette and elevates it into an elegant handbag that is practical and, most importantly, built to last, as stated by Mulberry’s creative director, Johnny Coca. The double loop handles and shoulder strap add to the bag's practicality. Last year, all of Mulberry's UK operations - factories, offices and shops - became carbon neutral. The company's goal is to be carbon neutral worldwide by 2025. Mulberry will donate all profits from the bag to the World Land Trust, a conservation charity that funds the creation of reserves and provides permanent protection for habitats and wildlife.
Thierry Andretta, CEO of Mulberry says that she’s incredibly excited to oversee the creation of Mulberry's first fully sustainable handbag. Through our commitments to environmental responsibility at Mulberry, we continue our innovative approach to conscious design and manufacturing, ensuring we offer our customers truly luxurious and responsible products. In addition to being a member of the Leather Working Group, Mulberry has demonstrated its commitment to sourcing sustainable materials as certified by Better Cotton Initiative, Textile Exchange’s Responsible Down Standard, as well as Responsible Down Standard.
