The NPD Group reported that overall dollar sales of jeans declined 5% in the 12 months ending May 2015. However, sales increased 2% among Millennials, with older Millennial driving 13% of dollar sales.According to the report, Millennials accounted for 28% of jeans sales during this time period, followed by Generation Z (age 17 and under) with 24%. Denim is proving to be a symbol of youth style, and isn't confined to jeans. Jackets, vests and shirts are popular denim items; pushed on by the double denim trend.“Denim is facing a real opportunity to build on past and present success with subtle strategic changes,” said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at The NPD Group. “While the industry is not yet in a state of recovery, brands are focusing their energy on the younger customer base, where jeans sales are growing.”But the challenge of fit and finding comfortable denim jeans, remains an issue, according to another NPD survey. Some 63% of consumers surveyed said they like wearing jeans, but just 32% purchased a pair for themselves in the past five months. Meanwhile, the same survey found that one out every four consumers said they can’t find jeans they like or that fit well anymore.Therefore, an opportunity exists for designers to offer a wider range of fits, colors and styles (outside of the trending black, skinny models), as well as offering more bespoke or made-to-measure denim services.“There are missed opportunities across the denim retail landscape, from the limited distribution of classic styles, fuller cuts, and peripheral specialty sizes, to the absence of color that is living large in so many other industries," said Cohen. “Providing a broader mix of product that appeals to a broader audience, with variety stocked in stores, will help to bridge the gap between what consumers are buying, what they want to buy, and rejuvenation of the denim market.”Available on Le Souk, Heralfab is a purveyor of organic denim in both sturdy and fine cotton.
