Spinnova secures a EUR 1.9 million grant from Business Finland to advance its SPINNOVA® fiber project, aiming to pioneer pilot-scale production from textile and agricultural waste streams.

In a significant stride towards revolutionizing the textile industry's sustainability landscape, Spinnova, the pioneering Finnish fiber technology company, has been awarded a substantial grant of up to EUR 1.9 million by Business Finland. The grant, disbursed for the research and development (R&D) endeavors, will span a two-year period, commencing from April 15, 2023, and culminating on April 14, 2025.

The monetary injection, constituting a generous 50% of the estimated total project cost of EUR 3.9 million, underscores the importance and potential of Spinnova's innovative venture. Fueled by this investment, the company endeavors to take its visionary SPINNOVA® fiber concept to new heights.

Revolutionizing Fiber Creation and Recycling

The heart of this endeavor lies in the creation of a pilot-scale production process, harnessing the potential of textile and agricultural waste streams to create SPINNOVA® fiber. The implications of such a development are far-reaching, holding the promise of not only a novel avenue for sustainable fiber creation but also the establishment of a refined refining environment. This environment will serve dual purposes – enabling the pilot-scale production of SPINNOVA® fiber and facilitating the recycling of the same material, fostering a circular economy approach.

A key objective of this product development initiative is the expansion of Spinnova's technological repertoire. By integrating novel refining and fiber recycling components, the company envisions empowering fiber-producing factories to embrace a more sustainable and eco-conscious approach. This strategic evolution sets the stage for Spinnova to explore new horizons and avenues, bolstering its position in the market and capitalizing on emerging opportunities.

Elevating Sustainability and Industry Competitiveness

Integral to this transformation is the concerted drive towards enhancing energy efficiency throughout the refining process. This not only aligns with Spinnova's sustainability ethos but also promises to enhance the overall competitiveness of SPINNOVA® fiber in the textile industry landscape.

Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Spinnova, Juha Salmela, emphasized the significance of the grant in furthering the company's mission. He stated, "Business Finland’s grant supports our development work to become even more sustainable and competitive by being able to offer technology that can process multiple circular raw materials into textile fiber." This sentiment underscores the transformative impact of this R&D initiative and its potential to reshape the industry's future.

As Spinnova embarks on this ambitious journey, it is poised to set new benchmarks in sustainable fiber innovation. With the backing of Business Finland's grant, the company is on track to redefine the textile landscape, positioning itself as a trailblazer in circular economy solutions and sustainable textile production.
